Chapter 50: Nicolaus — Part 1

50話　ニコラウス　前編

 

 

“Stick a needle into the mandrake’s root and suck out the sap. There’s an organ where the liquid pools around the center of the root, so you pierce there.”

「マンドラゴラの根に針を刺して体液を吸い出す。根の真ん中あたりに液が溜まってる器官があるから、そこに刺すんだけど」

 

“What are you doing…!?”

「なんてことするんですか……！？」

 

“It’s just one method of extracting the medicinal components. …That’s why I said you wouldn’t want to do it.”

「薬の成分を抽出する方法の一つなだけ。……だからお前はやりたくないだろうって言っただろ」

 

 

Mandrakes are just plant-type monsters and only useful as medicinal materials. Treating them like people or pets is the unusual thing. Besides, these monsters weren’t supposed to have strong emotions or wills.

マンドラゴラはただの植物系魔物で有用な薬の材料でしかない。まるで人や愛玩動物のように扱う方が特殊なのである。しかもこの魔物は感情も意思も強くない、はずだった。

But the two in front of him were trembling at Nicolaus’s words, so at the very least they had the intelligence to understand human speech, and perhaps their emotions and wills were as developed as a human’s.

しかし目の前の二体はニコラウスの話を聞いて震えているため、少なくとも人の言葉を理解する知能があり、かつ感情や意思も人並みにあるのかもしれない。

 

(What kind of evolution would make them like this… And their level is only three, too.)

（どういう進化をしたらこうなるんだろう。……レベルだって3しかないのに）

 

A monster’s level, the number indicating how much it has grown, rises when monsters fight and take lives. The biggest difference between human stats and monster stats is whether this item exists or not.

魔物の成長具合を示す数字であるレベルは、魔物同士が争って命を奪い合うことで上がるもの。人間のステータスと魔物のステータスでの最も大きな違いはこの項目があるかないか、だろう。

Nicolaus thought it meant they absorbed the souls of defeated monsters and the eaten souls grew by that amount. That growth of soul also affects the vessel, the monster. The more the soul grows, the more the vessel can develop in shape and function.

これは倒した魔物の魂を吸収し、食らった魔物の魂がその分成長したという証。というのがニコラウスの考えだ。そうしてこの魂の成長は、器である魔物にも影響する。魂が成長すればするほど、器は形や機能を成長させることができるようになるのだ。

The higher this level, the more evolutions a monster can undergo, and depending on the path its evolution takes, it can become a special individual. That the witch’s familiars had already taken on special evolutions despite low levels was extremely interesting.

このレベルが高ければ高いほど魔物はあらゆる進化ができるようになり、その進化の仕方によっては特殊な個体へと変わる。レベルが低いのにすでに特殊な進化をしている魔女の眷属たちは非常に興味深かった。

 

(Choosing to evolve into something that can walk first isn’t monster logic… Mandrakes don’t need to move in the first place. Normally a monster’s instinct is to grow bigger first…)

（真っ先に歩けるようになる進化を選ぶなんて、魔物の思考じゃないからな……マンドラゴラはそもそも移動する必要のない魔物だし。まずは大きく成長しようとするのが普通の魔物の感覚のはずだけど……）

 

Such an evolution couldn’t happen on its own unless the monster had human-like thinking, so either the witch gave them the capacity to think, or the witch forced that evolution. Either way, the method was intriguing.

魔物自身に人間のような思考力がなければ独自にこのような進化はできないから、魔女が思考力を与えたのか、それとも魔女がこのように進化させたのか。どちらにせよその方法が気になるところだ。

 

 

“Also, I think that mandrake needs to grow. Right now it’s just an oddball mandrake… It’ll have to defeat other monsters, raise its level, and evolve. Well, if that purple sprout is inclined to pair with a human, it might change like that.”

「それから、そのマンドラゴラの成長も必要だと思うよ。今は風変りなだけのマンドラゴラだし……ほかの魔物を倒して、レベルを上げて、進化しないといけない。まあ、その紫株に人間と番う気があればそういう変化をすると思うけど」

 

“Do you mean… make Murasaki fight other monsters…? We can’t do something like that. By the Flower Witch’s orders, the village mandrakes don’t have the ability to fight.”

「それって……紫ちゃんと魔物を戦わせるってことですか……？　そんなことできませんよ、魔女殿の命令で村のマンドラゴラたちは戦う能力がないんですから」

 

“You don’t have to make it fight directly — bring one that’s weakened or unconscious and have it absorb that, and I think it’ll grow…”

「別に直接戦わなくても弱ったり気絶させた魔物を連れてきて、それに吸収させれば成長するとは思うけど……」

 

“Um, if you’re really going to do that kind of research, please get the Flower Witch’s permission, both of you. Those mandrakes belong to the Flower Witch.”

「あの、さすがにそういう研究をするなら魔女殿の許可を取ってくださいね、お二人とも。このマンドラゴラたちは魔女殿の物なのですから」

 

“I know. …Even if its level goes up, I don’t think it’ll be able to break free from her control, so it’s probably fine. But if its magic grows, you might not be able to keep up, so do not raise its level too much.”

「分かってるよ。……レベルが上がったところで支配下から抜け出せそうにないし、問題ないとは思うけど。ただし魔力が成長したらお前が追い付けなくなりそうだから、レベルの上げ過ぎは厳禁だ」

 

 

Although he wasn’t as enthusiastic about research as before, he was still interested in monster evolution. If the ancestor of the demon race was a child between a monster and a human, Ritter might become the progenitor of a new demon bloodline.

研究に対し以前ほどの熱心さはないとはいえ、魔物の進化に興味があることには変わりない。魔族の祖が魔物と人間の間の子供だとするならば、リッターは今後新しい魔族の血統の親になるのかもしれない。

That said, since the other party is a plant monster far removed from humans, the odds would be extremely low.

とはいえ、相手は人間と遠く離れた植物の魔物なので確率としては非常に低いだろうが。

 

(If they had children, that would be interesting… Would the child be a monster or a human… or a new kind of demon?)

（子供ができたら面白いな。……生まれてくる子供は魔物か、人間か……それとも新しい魔族か）

 

Just imagining it was enough to pique his interest, so Nicolaus wanted to actively support Ritter. People who deliberately choose a monster as a mate were rare, so this might be the first and last chance in research on creating a new demon lineage.

想像するだけで非常に興味を惹かれるため、やはりリッターのことは積極的に支援したい。魔物を伴侶に選ぶ特殊な嗜好の持ち主はそうそう現れないだろうから、これは新しい魔族を作る研究において最初で最後の機会かもしれないのだ。

 

(It might confirm the theory that the ancestor of the demons was a child of a monster and a human… Well, even if that’s true, it’d be a different bloodline from ours.)

（魔族の祖が魔物と人の間の子だって説が確定するかも。……まあ、そうだとしても僕らとは別の血統になるか）

 

If the current ancestor of the demon race was a monster, that monster probably wasn’t plant-based. The Flower Witch only looks like she does because she uses plant magic; the demon race itself doesn’t have plant characteristics. Their forms are the same as humans, so they were likely humanoid monsters from the start.

今の魔族の祖が魔物だとして、その魔物は植物系統ではないだろう。花の魔女は植物の魔法を使っているからあの姿なだけで、魔族自体には植物の特徴がない。形は人間と変わらないため、元から人型の魔物だと思われる。

But Ritter was trying to take a mandrake as a mate. Familiars only mimic the form of their master, the Flower Witch—

しかし今、リッターが伴侶にしようとしているのはマンドラゴラだ。眷属だからこそ、主人である花の魔女を真似た形をしているだけで――。

 

(Huh? …If a familiar becomes the ancestor of a new demon race, in a way that Flower Witch would be their parent… or the true progenitor…?)

（ん？　……眷属が新しい魔族の祖になると、ある意味あの花の魔女はその親……というか真祖みたいなものか……？）

 

Even without blood relation, there would be magical influence, so they wouldn’t be completely unrelated. Demons aren’t born without a witch as the womb because it’s said the fetus is affected by magic. The familiars of the mandrake carry the same magic as the witch, so a new species born from familiars might be called a lineage of the Flower Witch.

血縁はないにしろ魔力的な影響はあるし、完全に無関係とはならないだろう。魔女を母体としなければ魔族は生まれず、それは胎児に魔力の影響があるからとされている。眷属のマンドラゴラたちは魔女と同じ魔力をまとっているので、眷属から生まれる新種は花の魔女の系統と呼べるかもしれない。

 

(I see… Because the witch exists… our line didn’t completely die out after all.)

（というか、そっか。……魔女がいるから……絶えたわけじゃないな、僕たちの一族も）

 

Without a witch, no new demons would be born. That’s why Nicolaus was alone and had no choice but to create a new demon race.

魔女がいなければもう魔族は生まれない。だからニコラウスは一人だったし、新しい魔族を作るしかなかった。

But since the witch had survived, there might be a possibility of new kin being born in the future. Someday she might take someone as a mate, if she ever wanted to… and that partner would be—

しかし魔女が生き残っていたのだから、もしかすると今後新しい同族が生まれる可能性はあるのだ。いつか彼女が誰かを伴侶に迎えて、それを望む日がくればの話ではあるが。……そして、その相手は――。

 

 

“Um, mage. …You suddenly zoned out—what’s wrong?”

「あの、魔導士殿。……急に考えこまれてどうしました？」

 

“…Ah, I was just lost in thought a bit. …Isn’t it about time the break ended?”

「……ああ、ちょっと思考に入り込んでた。……そろそろ休憩は終わりでいいんじゃない？」

 

“Ah, yes. Ritter looks like he’s about to drift off into some weird world, too.”

「ああ、そうですね。リッターも変な世界に入りそうですから」

 

 

A voice pulled him back from the verge of thinking things he shouldn’t, and Nicolaus suggested resuming the meeting to avoid overthinking.

余計なことまで考えそうになっていたところに声を掛けられ、意識を引き戻される。これ以上考えすぎないためにもニコラウスは会議の再開を提案した。

After that, with breaks and meals in between, the meeting continued and was dismissed before the date changed. They could continue tomorrow; there was no need to rush and be sloppy, and they mustn’t let it interfere with the knights’ usual duties.

その後、休憩や食事を挟みつつも会議は続き、日付が変わるよりは早く解散となった。続きはまた明日以降にすればいい、急いで雑になってもいけないし、根を詰めすぎて騎士たちの通常業務に影響をきたしてもいけない。

 

Nicolaus left the knights’ lodgings and headed to the wooden house that had been specially built next door. Feeling something behind him, he turned and saw a mandrake wearing green clothes.

ニコラウスは騎士団の宿を後にして、隣にわざわざ作られた木の家へと向かう。背後に気配を感じて振り返ると、そこには緑の服をまとったマンドラゴラがいた。

 

 

“…What, you? Planning to follow me?”

「……なんだ、お前。僕についてくる気？」

 

 

The short hand he raised was probably a sign of affirmation. It was an object of curiosity he wanted to observe, and there was no reason to refuse, so he let it follow. …He slowed his pace a little simply because he was tired from the long meeting, not for the sake of the plant shuffling along on its short legs.

短い手を挙げて見せたのは肯定の意だろう。観察したい興味の対象でもあるし、拒絶する理由はないかと好きにさせることにした。……少しだけ歩く速度を落としたのは長時間の会議で疲れたからだ。短い脚を動かして懸命についてくる植物のためではない。

Standing before the witch-made house with the mandrake’s green sprout, Nicolaus looked at a house made by another member of the demon race with magic superior to his.

マンドラゴラの緑の株とともに、ニコラウスは魔女が作った家の前に立つ。自分以外の魔族による、自分より優れた魔法でできた家だ。

 

(…This is, yeah. It’s curiosity about magic. No way did anything like this appear in the remaining magic tomes. There were no magic users better than me, so my curiosity is just being tickled.)

（……これは、そう。魔法への興味だから。さすがにこんなの、残された魔導書には載ってなかったし。僕より優れた魔法の使い手がいなかったから、好奇心がくすぐられてるだけ）

 

An emotion he hadn’t much felt flowed through Nicolaus’s body. He was fidgety and restless, but not uncomfortable. This long-unfelt sensation was probably something like “fun” or “happiness.”

ニコラウスの体の中であまり覚えのない感情が巡っている。そわそわと落ち着かないのに、不快ではない。久しく感じていなかったこれはおそらく「楽しい」とか「嬉しい」とか、そういう類のものだ。

But to be happy about something like this would be like a child giddy over a new toy. He pressed his brow, calmed himself, and then reached out his hand.

しかしこんなことで喜んではまるで新しいおもちゃにはしゃぐ子供のようだ。ぐっと眉間に力を込め、一度気持ちを落ち着かせてから手を伸ばす。

 

—The house door opened on its own in response to that hand, and a sound of surprise mixed with joy escaped from him—one he’d never remembered making before—but he was truly glad that the only one who heard it was the mandrake that couldn’t speak.

――その手に反応して勝手に開いた家の扉のせいで、これまで出した覚えのないような驚きと喜びの混じった声が上がったが、それを聞いたのが物言えぬマンドラゴラだけでよかったと心底思った。

 

 

 

 

Maybe I let out a happy “Waa…!” or something like that… like a child arriving at a dreamland for the first time…

嬉しそうに「わぁ……！」みたいな声がでたのかもしれません…初めて夢の国に来た子供のように…。
