Chapter 64

64話

 

 

After sipping the tea Noel had brought, Nicolaus cleared his throat lightly to tighten the atmosphere and began talking business again.

ノエルが持ってきてくれたお茶で一息を吐いた後、ニコラウスは軽い咳払いをして雰囲気を締め直し、改めて仕事の話を始めた。

 

 

“You have that favored merchant, right? He’s connected to the Ernat lord here, and his identity is solid. I’ll have transactions go through him, so you only need to increase the purified flowers.”

「お前が贔屓にしてる商人がいるだろ？　あれはここの……エルナト領主と繋がりがあるし、身元は確かだからね。取引はあれを通じてやらせるから、お前は浄花を増やすだけでいいよ」

 

 

It seemed Ilai would be taking over the trade in purified flowers. And for the first time I learned that he apparently did business with the lord of the territory.

どうやら浄花の取引はイライが引き受けることになるようだ。そして初めて知ったのだけれど、彼は領主とも取引があるらしい。

I’d thought of him as a strange merchant who bow-wrapped and buttered people up and still came to this remote place to trade, but I was a little surprised to learn he was a big merchant who dealt with local lords.

揉み手とゴマすりの印象が強く、こんな僻地にも商売に来るのでどことなく変人の商人のような気がしていたが、領主とも取引をするような大商人だったのかとちょっと驚いた。

 

(But that makes sense… Ilai brought the mirror, but the real giver was Nicolaus… Thinking about it makes me scared.)

（でもそうだよね……あの鏡、イライさんが持ってきたけど、本当の贈り主はニコラウスさんだったんだもんね……思い出すと怖いよぉ）

 

And Nicolaus normally lived at the royal castle and would be close to royalty and nobles. So Ilai, who had been entrusted with the mirror by him, was also connected. …I’d never put that together.

そしてニコラウスは本来王城暮らしで、王族や貴族という存在とも近しいものだろう。ならば彼から鏡を託されたイライもまた、その関係者ということだ。……全然思い至らなかった。

 

 

“Also, on another matter… I wanted to ask you something.”

「それと別件で……僕から一つ相談なんだけど」

 

 

I tensed when Nicolaus said he had a question. I couldn’t help feeling uneasy about what he was going to say. I clasped my hands tightly on the table and braced for the next words.

ニコラウスから相談と言われて身構えた。一体どんな話が飛び出すのか不安で仕方がない。自分の手をテーブルの上でぎゅっと握り合わせて、次に出てくる言葉を待ち構える。

 

 

“About your familiars—despite their personalities, they haven’t evolved as monsters. They’ve blended into the village harmlessly… I want to run evolution experiments on them.”

「お前の眷属たちなんだけどさ、個性は豊かなのに魔物としての進化はしてないよね。ここまで無害なまま、村の中に馴染んでるし……進化の実験をしてみたいんだけど」

 

(You mean… level them up…?)

（それって……子株たちのレベルアップをしたい、ってコト……？）

 

 

I was surprised by the unexpected proposal. The offshoots were supposed to be harmless and powerless. I had only given commands for “so they can run” and “to put a lid on their voices so they won’t suddenly scream” — other evolutions were off-limits. …Well, for the purple one I had ordered one extra evolution so it would take a female form, but other than that I hadn’t done more.

予想外の提案に驚いた。子株たちは無害で、無力であるべき。そう思って「走れるようになること」「急に叫ばないように声の蓋を作ること」以外の進化はさせていない。……いや、紫の場合は女体の形になるよう余計に一つ進化の命令を下しているが、それ以外はしていなかった。

That’s why the offshoots were weak and harmless. I never thought a human would suggest purposely giving monsters strength. Nicolaus really was an oddball.

だからこそ子株たちは弱弱しく、何もできないがゆえに無害なのである。まさかわざわざ魔物に力をつけさせよう、なんて人間の方から言い出すとは思わなかった。やはりニコラウスは変わり者だ。

 

 

“Especially the purple one. I’m very curious whether it could produce offspring with humans.”

「特に紫のやつにね。……人間との間に子孫を作ることができるのか、とても興味がある」

 

(Ah… so it was Ritter… He’s probably been consulting about this lately.)

（ああ……なるほど、リッターさんか……最近よく話してたのはこれについての相談だったのかな）

 

 

Leohardt had looked pretty lonely since Nicolaus and Ritter were talking a lot. He was even seeking conversation with a witch he’d hardly spoken to before.

リッターとニコラウスが話し込んでいたので、レオハルトはずいぶん寂しそうだった。ほとんど話したこともないような魔女との会話を求めるくらいである。

But from Ritter’s perspective, who was seriously in love with the purple offshoot, the most important issue would be the species barrier. I can’t fathom how someone comes up with the idea of producing offspring between a plant and a human, but he was earnest, and Nicolaus was willing to go along.

しかしどうやら紫株に対して本気の恋愛感情を持っているリッターからすれば、最も重要な問題が種族の壁なのだろう。植物と人間で子孫を作るなんて一体どうやったらそんな発想になるのか全く分からないが彼は真剣で、ニコラウスもそれに付き合う気なのだ。

 

(Hmm… They’re the ones asking, so it should be fine… right?)

（うーん……人間側からやりたいって言ってるんだから、いいんだよねぇ……？）

 

If I tried to raise the offshoots myself, I might become a dangerous witch trying to raise dangerous monsters, but if a court mage like Nicolaus says he wants to, it should be okay.

私が自分で子株たちを育てれば、危険な魔物を育てようとする危険な魔女になるかもしれないが、宮廷魔導士をやっているニコラウスが「やりたい」と言っているのであれば問題はないのだろう。

And above all, Nicolaus was a mad scientist who loved experiments. While he was obsessed with the offshoots, he paid less attention to me — that had been clear from him leaving me alone lately. I wanted the offshoots to act as my stand-ins.

そしてなにより、ニコラウスはこういう実験が好きなマッドサイエンティストなのだ。子株たちに夢中になっている間はあまり私のところに意識が向かない、というのはここしばらく放置してくれていたことからも明白。子株に私の身代わりになってもらいたい。

When I nodded, I saw an unusual expression on his face as he lifted the corners of his mouth into a grin. …I was so frightened that a short, silent scream rose inside me.

私が頷くと、ニヤリと口角を上げるという珍しい表情が目に飛び込んでくる。……怖くて体内で短く悲鳴があがった。

 

 

“Well, I won’t do anything bad. The mandrakes among your familiars are strong-willed, right? Tell them to refuse my request if they don’t want to.”

「まあ、悪いようにはしないよ。お前の眷属のマンドラゴラって意思が強いだろ？　僕の頼みも嫌なら断るように伝えておいて」

 

(Are the offshoots that strong-willed…? Well, they’re obedient to me so I don’t really know. They do seem to be developing their own personalities… maybe some self-awareness is growing.)

（子株たちってそんなに意思強いかな……？　まあ、私には従順だから分からないだけか。たしかにそれぞれ個性を伸ばしてるみたいだし……自己意識みたいなものが育ってるのかも）

 

 

Of course, it could all be an act. Because I’d originally ordered them to “look harmless and cute,” each one was aiming to be harmless and cute in its own way.

それもすべて演技である可能性もあるが。私が最初に下した「無害で可愛く見せろ」という命令を守っている結果、それぞれが思うように無害で可愛い姿を目指しているのだ。

Since there is individuality and variation, it’s possible each has its own will and thought.

そこに個性やばらつきがあるのだから、確かにそれぞれの意思、思考があるのかもしれない。

 

(Hmm… but to level up they have to defeat monsters… I’m worried about making the offshoots fight. A mandrake that can’t scream is just a plant.)

（うーん……でもレベルアップするには魔物を倒さなきゃいけないし……子株を戦わせるのは心配だなぁ。叫べないマンドラゴラはただの草だし）

 

The offshoots’ voices were sealed so they wouldn’t harm humans, and they had no means of attack. Their roots can absorb some magic, but unlike me, their touch doesn’t make someone wither before their eyes.

人間に危害を及ぼせないように声を封じてある子株たちに攻撃手段はない。根の部分は多少魔力を吸うとはいえ、私のように触れた傍から見る見る相手が枯れていくという現象は、子株たちの場合は起きないのだ。

 

(I’ll at least give them defensive measures. Not offensive… more like nets for capture, maybe?)

（一応防衛手段は持たせておこう。攻撃用じゃなくて……捕獲用の網、みたいな？）

 

I’d been warned people would be coming and going a lot, and dangerous humans might come in. To maintain my image as a “useful, good witch,” it would be best if the offshoots could do something to protect the villagers if danger approached.

どうやら人の出入りも激しくなるようだし、危険な人間も入ってくるかもしれないという忠告は受けている。私の「役に立つ善良な魔女」というイメージを守るためにも、村人に危険が迫った場合、子株も何かしら対抗できるようにしておくべきだろう。

 

 

“If the mandrakes show any changes, I’ll share them. …Also, tell me if you notice anything. Research needs lots of opinions and perspectives. …I’ll bring nutrient solution from time to time.”

「マンドラゴラたちに何かしらの変化があったら共有する。……あと、お前も何か気づいたら教えてほしいんだけど。研究のためにはいろんな意見や見解が必要だからね。……栄養剤はちょくちょく持ってくる」

 

(I’d rather you not bring it so often…!! Just once in a lump would be fine…!!)

（ちょくちょくは持ってこなくていいかな……！！　まとめて一回でいいから……！！）

 

 

The thought of Nicolaus visiting frequently made me secretly quake, but I forced a smile. Watching me like that, Nicolaus’s mouth looked like it was smiling too, and that made me even more afraid. …My brain was already full of offshoot experiments. That mad scientist.

頻繁に訪れるニコラウスを想像して内心怯える私だが、口元だけはにっこり笑っている。そんな私を眺めるニコラウスの口元が笑っているように見えて、非常に怖かった。……すでに脳内では子株実験でいっぱいに違いない。このマッドサイエンティストめ。
