Chapter 43 Nicolaus

43話　ニコラウス

 

 

 

The birth of a new magic zone and the appearance of the Flower Witch. Those two items often came up on the agenda at the castle meetings, and Nicolaus, summoned as a witness, sighed in genuine irritation.

魔境の誕生と、花の魔女の出現。それの二つが議題に上ることの多い王城の会議に、参考人として呼ばれたニコラウスは心底面倒くさいとため息を吐いた。

If a new magic zone forms, there’s a high chance of a monster disaster that shifts the boundary between monsters’ territories and human living areas. Signs of that were already showing, and it was only natural for the country to discuss countermeasures in advance. The annoying part was that the discussion kept running in circles and never progressed.

新しい魔境ができたなら、魔物の縄張りと人間の生活圏の境界線が変わる魔物災害が起こる可能性は高い。実際にその兆候は出ているし、国があらかじめ対応を話し合うのは当然のことだ。面倒くさいのは、話し合いが平行線のまま進まないことである。

 

 

“That’s why I’m saying that witch is cooperative and competent as support. That alone should make her a sufficient fighting force.”

「だから、あの魔女は協力的だし、サポートとして有能だと言ってる。それで充分に戦力になるはずだ」

 

“However… wouldn’t it be better to have someone who survived the war with the dragons lead the charge?”

「ですが……竜との戦争を生き抜いた実力者なら、先頭に立って戦ってもらった方がよろしいのではないでしょうか？」

 

“Huh? Putting that witch on the front lines—are you crazy?”

「はあ？　あの魔女を最前線に置くとか馬鹿じゃないの？」

 

 

If she really was a witch who survived the war against the dragons, she’d likely be a one-woman army. The opinion that she should be put in the thick of it to minimize damage was understandable.

竜との戦争を生き延びた魔女ならば確かに一騎当千の猛者だろう。矢面に立たせて被害を最小限に抑えたいという意見も当然出る。

But Nicolaus couldn’t accept that. He wanted her to take a rear-support role and to keep her as safe as possible.

しかしニコラウスとしてはそれを許容できなかった。あの魔女には後方支援に回ってもらい、できるだけ身の安全を確保させたい。

 

 

“Sending the best forces to a mere monster disaster is the height of folly. That talent should be conserved. If we lose the witch… what will we do if the next catastrophe is dragon-level?”

「ただの魔物災害で、最高戦力を出すのは愚行の極みだね。あれは温存するべき戦力だよ。もし魔女を失って……次に竜レベルの厄災が来たらどうするわけ？」

 

“Then we shall call upon the Archmage…”

「その時こそ大魔導士殿に出て頂くことに……」

 

“She’s stronger than me? …If someone is to be sacrificed first, it should be me.”

「僕よりあの魔女の方が強いのに？　……まず犠牲にするなら僕にするべきだ」

 

 

In a time of crisis he would risk his life—he had that contract, and because of it he lived in the castle as a court mage and was allowed to pursue his research as he pleased. He had no intention of running from battle, but he was fed up with those elderly men who knew nothing. Humans who hadn’t even lived a tenth of his years and were inexperienced with magic were such a problem.

有事の際には命を懸ける。その契約でニコラウスは宮廷魔導士として城に住み、好きなように研究をさせてもらっていた。だから戦いから逃げ出す気はないが、何も分かっていない幼い老人たちには辟易する。自分の十分の一も生きておらず魔法に未熟な人間はこれだから困るのだ。

The Flower Witch’s usefulness was high. Even though Nicolaus could handle various magics, that meant he couldn’t deeply master each one. To be frank: wide but shallow, a jack-of-all-trades.

花の魔女の有用性は高い。ニコラウスは様々な魔法を扱えるとはいえ、その分一つ一つの魔法を深く理解して使うことはできない。端的に言えば広く浅い、器用貧乏なのだ。

If someone was to die first, it should be Nicolaus, not the witch… he would rather not be the sole survivor.

先に死ぬなら魔女ではなくニコラウスの方がいい。……自分だけが生き残るのだけは御免だ。

 

 

“However, in terms of magical versatility, you can’t beat the Archmage. Plant manipulation magic seems limited in scope, doesn’t it?”

「しかし、魔法の汎用性では大魔導士殿に敵わないでしょう。植物を操る魔法は、対応範囲が限定的では？」

 

“Those ignorant fools who’ve never seen demons should shut up… What I can do that the witch can’t is probably only teleportation. And even that isn’t all that useful, right?”

「魔法を極めた魔族を見たことない無知無能は黙って。……僕にできてあの魔女ができないのは、瞬間移動くらいだろうね。それだってそこまで便利でもないでしょ」

 

 

Her plant-manipulating magic offered capabilities well beyond combat. If human living areas were reduced, her production capacity alone could prevent famine. She could make medicine, purify poisons, and contribute to public health.

植物を操る彼女は戦闘面以外にもかなりの能力を発揮する。もし人の生活区域が縮小する結果となったとして、あの生産力があれば人が飢えることはない。薬も作れて、毒物の浄化もできて、公衆衛生面でも役に立つ。

Nicolaus’s magic made comfortable lives more convenient when people’s needs were already met. The Flower Witch’s magic built the foundations of human life. It’s obvious which could rebuild society no matter what disaster came next.

ニコラウスの魔法は人の生活が充分に満たされている場合に、それを便利にするようなもの。花の魔女の魔法は、人間の生活の根幹を作り出すものだ。この先、どんな災害が起きても建て直すことができるのはどちらか、言うまでもない。

 

 

(Perhaps people can’t grasp the witch’s power without seeing it for themselves. Well, it’s abnormal to use such advanced magic without batting an eye, so it’s no wonder ordinary people can’t imagine it. Actually, what can’t that witch do? Aside from teleportation, she seems like she could come up with alternatives for everything.)

（あの魔女の魔法の力は実際に目にしないと理解しにくいか。まあ、あれだけ高度な魔法を顔色一つ変えずに使うのは異常だし、凡人が想像できなくても仕方ない。っていうか、あの魔女はむしろ何ができないんだ？　瞬間移動以外は代替方法を出してきそうなんだけど）

 

 

Teleportation is a spatial magic the witch doesn’t use, but it consumes a lot of mana and can’t transport large numbers of people or goods in a short time—so it has many limiting conditions despite seeming useful. But with the witch’s support in creating medicines, its effectiveness would leap forward. And it’s not just teleportation; many attack and defense spells Nicolaus could use could be layered on top of it.

そして魔女が扱えない空間魔法である瞬間移動だが、魔力の消費が大きく短時間で大量の人や物資を送ることなどできないのだから、便利に思えてもこちらこそ限定条件が多い。だが花の魔女が作り出す薬のサポートがあれば、それは飛躍的な性能へと進化する。それに瞬間移動だけではなく、ニコラウスが使う様々な攻撃、防御魔法とていくつも重ねて使えるのだ。

Have her handle rear support while Nicolaus and the knights stand the front. That would be the least accident-prone arrangement.

彼女に後方支援を担ってもらい、ニコラウスが騎士団と共に前線に立つ。それが最も事故が起こりにくい形だろう。

 

 

(Well, some people might die. Even so, with a witch who can pop out full-healing potions like that, the casualties should be kept fairly low. …They don’t want to lose the talent they’ve cultivated, but such a monster can’t be grown in five hundred years.)

（まあ、何人かは死ぬかもしれないけど。それだってあれだけぽんぽん完全回復薬を出す魔女が支援すればかなり被害は抑えられるはず。……せっかく育てた人材を失いたくないんだろうけど、あんな化け物は五百年かけたって育たないんだからな）

 

 

You can’t reach that level just by raising a human for ten or twenty years. Even Nicolaus, who’d lived five hundred years, didn’t think he could match her.

人間を十年や二十年育てたくらいでは到底届かない。五百年生きたニコラウスですら、あれに届く気はしない。

They had no idea how precious such a talent was. Older men shouldn’t lose perspective; advice from one senior should be taken with humility.

それがどれほど貴重な人材か全く分かっていないようだ。老人は視野が狭くなっていけない、年上の助言は素直に聞くものである。

 

 

“Besides… do you understand that the witch isn’t in the kingdom’s military? If they don’t know each other’s methods, coordination with the knights won’t work. Are you going to have her handle the overflow of monsters from the magic zone all by herself?”

「そもそも……魔女が国軍の所属じゃないの分かってる？　互いの手段も分からないんじゃ、騎士団との連携が取れないよね。たった一人で魔境から溢れる魔物に対応させる気？」

 

“Th-That is… however, it’s natural for the people to stand up for the kingdom in times of danger.”

「そ、それは……しかし、国の危機に民が立ち向かうのは当然のことです」

 

“That witch’s existence went unnoticed for five hundred years. The dragon disaster was an extinction-level threat, so magic races from all over the world gathered to fight. She could have been a witch from another nation. If we risk lives without proper procedure, this country might be abandoned.”

「あの魔女は五百年も存在が知られてなかった。竜の災害は人類滅亡の危機でもあったから、世界中の魔族が集まって戦った。なら他国の魔女だった可能性もある。筋も通さないで命だけかけさせようなんてしたら、この国が捨てられるかもね」

 

 

…Well, that good-natured person probably wouldn’t do something like that. Even without asking, she’d stay to protect Bit Village.

……まあ、あのお人良しはそんなことしないだろうが。頼まれなくたって、ビット村を守るためにあの場に留まるはずだ。

But monster disasters are a matter of numbers—huge swarms of monsters. It’s hard for one person to handle everything. If things went wrong, the witch could lose her life. Nicolaus wanted to avoid her dying before him at any cost.

しかし魔物災害は物量戦、大量の魔物が発生するものである。一人ですべてを捌くのは難しい。もし、一歩間違えれば魔女が命を落としかねない。ニコラウスより先に魔女が死ぬことだけは避けたかった。

 

 

“With the witch’s support, my combat power should more than double. I’m volunteering—what’s the problem?”

「あの魔女のサポートがあれば僕の戦力が倍以上になると考えていい。僕がやると言ってるのに何が不満なわけ？」

 

“…Enough. Since the court mage insists, let’s iron out the plan in that direction. We don’t have time for leisurely debates.”

「……ここまでだ。魔導士殿がここまで言うのだから、この方向性で作戦を詰めよう。あまり悠長に話し合いばかりしている時間はない」

 

“…Understood.”

「……分かりました」

 

 

Crown Prince Cedric’s words carried weight, and for the time being the matter was settled. Nicolaus exhaled, relieved that the witch could be moved to rear support. He wouldn’t interfere with the forthcoming plans unless specifically asked for his input.

王太子セドリックの言葉が鶴の一声となり、ひとまず話がまとまった。魔女を後方支援に回せるならなんでもいい、とニコラウスも息を吐く。この後の作戦に関しては意見を求められない限り口を出すこともないだろう。

 

 

“You looked unusual back there, Nicolaus.”

「珍しい様子だったな、ニコラウス殿」

 

 

After the meeting ended, Cedric stopped Nicolaus, who was trying to leave quickly for his chambers. Expecting another reprimand, Nicolaus was met with a smile instead—Cedric had seen the displeasure on his face and simply grinned.

会議が終わり、さっさと部屋に戻ろうとしていたニコラウスを呼び止めたのはセドリックだ。また小言でも言われるのかと思っていたら、顔に出た不満を見て相手は苦笑した。

 

 

“Don’t be so opposed… Since we’ve admitted she’s a witch, the Flower Witch would be your only kin, right? It’s natural you want to protect her.”

「そう嫌がらないでほしい。……魔女と認めた以上、花の魔女は唯一の同族だろう？　ニコラウス殿が守りたがるのは人として当然だ」

 

“…It’s not like that. There’s no proof she’s a witch. We call her that for convenience.”

「…………別に、そういうのじゃないけど。魔女だって証拠はないし。便宜上魔女って呼んでるだけで」

 

“Even so, you judged that the person labeled a witch had the strength to survive the dragon war. …If she’s not a witch, then what on earth is she?”

「それでも貴殿は、魔女とされる人物が竜との戦争を生き残れるだけの力を持っていると判断した。……それが魔女でなかったら一体何者だというのか」

 

 

No other race besides magic races could wield such magic. And among magic races, the witch’s skill was enough to make five-hundred-year-old Nicolaus feel he couldn’t reach her. Given the situation, she was an ancient witch who’d survived the dragon war. If not, the other explanations were—

あれだけの魔法を扱える人種は魔族以外にない。そして同じ魔族でも、五百年生きたニコラウスが届かないと感じるほどの熟練だ。状況から考えれば竜の戦争を生き残った、いにしえの魔女である。……そうでないとするなら、他の選択肢は。

 

 

“Well. Maybe she’s a freak or a monster? A strange evolution of the monsters?”

「さあ。それなら化け物か怪物なんじゃないの？　魔物の特異な進化だったりしてね」

 

“That’s utterly unrealistic and absurd. …Nicolaus, you know that yourself—you’re impossible to get a straight answer from.”

「それはまったく現実味がない、荒唐無稽な話だろう。……ニコラウス殿も自分で分かっているはずだ、まったく素直じゃないな」

 

“…So, what’s the point?”

「…………で、本題は？」

 

 

It seemed Cedric wasn’t there to scold Nicolaus about his attitude in the meeting this time. There must be another reason. Cutting through the awkwardness to ask, Cedric nodded.

どうやら今回は会議でのニコラウスの態度に小言を言いに来たわけではないらしい。ならば別の話があるはずだ。妙な居心地の悪さから話を切り出すと、セドリックは頷いた。

 

 

“As you said, the witch isn’t part of our military. We should officially request her cooperation from the crown. Send an envoy and make a proper plea.”

「ニコラウス殿の言う通り、魔女は国に所属している訳ではない。ならば国から、正式に協力を依頼するべきだろう？　使者を送り、しっかりとお願いをしなくてはいけない」

 

“…Well, that’s true. But she can’t speak, and she can only read and write ancient script.”

「……まあ、それはそうだけど。あの魔女は話せないし、古代文字しか読み書きできないよ」

 

“Right. So… would you go as our envoy, Nicolaus? We want you to mediate between the witch and the crown. You might have to go frequently, so you may not be able to focus fully on your research.”

「うむ。だから……ニコラウス殿が使者として向かってくれないか？　貴殿に魔女と国との間を取り持ってほしい。頻繁に通ってもらうことになりそうだから、研究には集中できないかもしれないが」

 

“…That’s fine. There’s no one better suited than me, anyway.”

「……別にいいけど。僕以外に適任、いないんだから」

 

 

He felt his mood lifting. Even if he couldn’t research in the castle, the village held many things of interest. His curiosity would be satisfied there. …There was no longer any reason to desperately try to create a new magic race.

自分でも気分が上向いたのが分かった。城で研究できずとも、あの村には非常に興味深いものが多いのだ。好奇心はそちらで充分満たされる。……新しい魔族を生み出すために、必死になる理由ももうない。

Cedric, who hadn’t shown much expression before, watched Nicolaus and for once allowed a rare smile.

表情に出したつもりはないがセドリックはそんなニコラウスを見て、普段はあまり見せない笑顔を浮かべる。

 

 

“…What? You make such an unusual face too.”

「……何？　お前も珍しい顔するじゃん」

 

“I want to repay my teacher at least a little.”

「私も師に多少なりとも恩返しをしたいんだ」

 

 

Called “teacher”, he remembered a moment from a short while ago. Cedric had been a child when Nicolaus had taught him a bit of magic. He hadn’t forgotten and apparently felt indebted.

師と呼ばれて少し前のことを思い出した。……セドリックがまだ子供の頃、ほんの少しだけ魔法を教えてやっただけだ。彼はまだそれを忘れておらず、恩と感じているらしい。

 

 

“…Making him work as repayment—how’s that supposed to be a favor?”

「……仕事をさせるのが恩返しって、それはどうなんだ」

 

“Haha. …Well, prepare yourself; I’ll draw up the official document.”

「はは。……では、正式な文書を作るので準備をしておいてくれ」

 

 

Watching Cedric walk away with a laugh, Nicolaus stared after him for a few seconds, then headed to his room. He began to think about what to prepare.

笑いながら去っていくセドリックの背中を数秒見つめて送った後、ニコラウスも自室へと足を向けた。何を準備するべきか、頭に思い浮かべていく。

What sort of gift should he bring the Flower Witch? …No matter what he brought, she would probably smile kindly and welcome him.

花の魔女に持っていく土産は何がいいだろう。……きっと、何を持って行っても彼女は優しく笑ってニコラウスを迎えてくれるのだろうけれど。

 

 

 

No matter what he brought, she just screamed.

何を持って行っても悲鳴を上げているだけなのである。

 

I forgot to make a reservation and I’m lateーー! I’m sorryーー!

予約するのを忘れてて遅刻しましたーー！ごめんなさいーー！
