Chapter 33.5: Eli

33.5話　イライ

 

 

 

Eli mainly operates within the Elnat territory, and among his clients the largest is likely the Count of the Elnat borderlands.

イライはエルナト領を主な活動区域としているが、その中でも一番大きな取引先は領主であるエルナト辺境伯だろう。

Because the lord is quite concerned about Bit Village where the witch lives, Eli has been summoned there repeatedly.

魔女の住むビット村の様子もかなり気にしているため、イライも度々呼び出されていた。

 

 

“The witch is no problem, yes?”

「その魔女は問題ないと？」

 

“Yes, for now. She certainly manipulates plants at will and devotes herself to the villagers. There are moving mandrakes, but when we appraised them they seemed to have been completely neutralized…”

「はい、今のところは。確かに植物を自在に操り、村人に尽くしております。動くマンドラゴラはいるんですが、鑑定したところ完全に無害化されているようで……」

 

 

The lord had a benefactor living in Bit Village, so he paid special attention to that village near the demon territory. He had been using Eli, who came and went as a traveling merchant, to check whether anything had gone wrong in the benefactor’s village.

領主はビット村に恩人がいるとのことで、ことさらに魔境付近のその村を気にしている。これまでも行商人として出入りするイライを使い、恩人の住む村に問題が起きていないかを確認してきた。

It was only natural for him to take notice of the suddenly appeared witch. Since the villagers seemed to be drawn to her, Eli kept his distance and observed for a while.

そんな彼が突如として現れた魔女を意識するのは当然のこと。村人が取り込まれている様子だったため、イライは魔女と距離を置いてしばらく観察に徹していた。

 

(She doesn’t really look like a villain… but after seeing those stats…)

（行動はあんまり悪人には見えないが……あんなステータスを見ちまったらな）

 

When he tried to check the witch’s stats with his appraisal skill, the text warped strangely, jittered, and trembled. Eli didn’t have particularly strong magic, so sometimes he couldn’t appraise things. But in that case the result should’ve just looked blacked out.

鑑定スキルを使って魔女のステータスを確認しようとしたら、文字が妙に歪んで乱れ、細かく震えて見えた。イライの魔力はそう高くないため、鑑定できないことはある。しかしそれなら黒く塗りつぶされたように見えるはずなのだ。

He’d never seen anything like it. Either the person was far above him in rank, or they were some kind of beast.

こんな現象は初めてだった。相手がよほど格上か、もしくは化け物かのどちらかであろう。

 

 

“Keep watching her. The paladin order’s investigation says she’s genuine… and all the more reason we shouldn’t have hostility toward her.”

「引き続き魔女の監視を頼む。聖騎士団の調査では本物だという話だけれど……それならなおさら、敵対心があっては困るからね」

 

 

Demons are formidable, single-handedly capable of incredible power. Even if there is Nicolaus—the court mage who is a survivor of the demons from five hundred years ago—this witch must have lived far longer than him. If she survived the calamity of the dragon wars, her true strength would be unfathomable. If she became an enemy of humanity, she would be a new calamity. The lord’s worries were understandable.

魔族は一騎当千の力の持ち主。五百年前の魔族の生き残りである宮廷魔導士ニコラウスがいるとはいえ、この魔女は彼よりもずっと長い時を生きているはずだ。厄災であった竜との戦いを生き延びたとすれば、その実力は計り知れない。彼女が人類の敵となれば新たなる厄災となるだろう。領主の懸念も理解できる。

 

 

“For now she is cooperative. I haven’t detected hostility or malice… And, about this—it’s jam made from plants the witch created. The appraisal came back clean… I was thinking of marketing it as a specialty of that village.”

「今のところは協力的です。敵意や悪意のようなものを感じたことはありません。……それで、こちらは魔女が作り出した植物からできたジャムですが、鑑定結果も問題なく……あの村の特産品として売り出そうかと」

 

 

Eli bought a jar of jam made by a young beastman boy named Noel and presented it to the lord as a sample. The status readout showed no toxicity or dependency—it was a safe, nutritious delicacy. Excessive consumption should be avoided, but that applies to any food. From Eli’s merchant sense, it was definitely a sellable product.

ノエルという獣人の少年が作っていたジャムを一瓶買い取らせてもらい、それを見本として領主に提出する。ステータス文を見ても毒性も依存性もなく、安全で栄養価の高い嗜好品だ。食べ過ぎには注意だが、それはどんな食品でも共通である。……イライの商売眼では間違いなく売れる商品になる。

Desperate to get permission to sell, Eli did his best to pitch the product to the lord. After all, he’d even gone so far as to investigate the witch’s identity—he felt he deserved at least this much reward.

絶対に販売許可が欲しいイライは、この商品の魅力を領主に必死にアピールした。正体の分からぬ魔女を探る役目までしたのだから、これくらいの旨味はあってもいいはずだ。

 

 

“I’ll permit the sale. My daughter would like it, and I might buy some myself. Oh, and one more thing… have you offer the witch a gift. Don’t tell her it’s from me.”

「販売を許可しよう。娘が喜びそうだし、私も買い取らせてもらおうかな。ああ、そうだ。……ついでに魔女に贈り物を頼むよ。決して私からだとは言わないでくれたまえ」

 

“Yes. What kind of thing would you like me to bring?”

「はい。どのようなものでしょうか？」

 

“Something women like… A mirror that shows a true form if someone’s appearance has been changed by skills or magic. I received it from the court mage; it should befit a witch more beautiful than I am. He asked me to send his regards too, so make it a gift.”

「女性が喜ぶものだよ。……スキルや魔法で姿を変えていたら真実の姿が映るという鏡でね。宮廷魔導士殿から頂いたんだけど、私よりも美しい魔女にふさわしいだろう。彼からもよろしくと言われているし、せっかくだから贈り物にしてくれ」

 

 

Eli felt his smile stiffen. In short, if the witch were some kind of monster in disguise, the moment she looked at the mirror her true form would be revealed.

イライは己の笑顔が引きつったのを感じた。それはつまり、もし魔女が何らかの怪物の化けた姿であれば、鏡に映った瞬間に正体が暴かれるということだ。

 

 

“My lord… if someone who is not a witch appears in the mirror…?”

「領主さま。……もし魔女でない者が映ったら……？」

 

“If you’ve told me there’s no hostility, then there’s nothing to fear.”

「敵意はないと君が言ったんだろう。それなら何も怯えることはない」

 

(This is why nobles are—!)

（これだから貴族ってやつは……！）

 

 

He meant for him to take responsibility for his words. There was no way to refuse, and he was entrusted with an outrageous souvenir to deliver on his way back—there was nothing left but to grin and bear it.

自分の言葉の責任を持てということだろう。断れるはずもなく、帰りにとんでもない手土産を任されて、もう笑うしかない。

 

（あの魔女が本当の善人であることを祈るしかない……）

 

しかも転移魔法陣を使って村の傍まで送り届けられた。よほど早い答えが欲しいらしい。その答えを求めているのが領主なのか宮廷魔導士なのかは分からないが。

On top of that, he was teleported to the edge of the village using a teleportation magic circle. They must have wanted an answer quickly. Whether that answer was wanted by the lord or by the court mage, he didn’t know.

得体のしれない女だが、あの魔女から悪意を感じたことがないのは本当だ。村人たちから慕われているのも事実。そこにすべてをかけて、魔法の鏡でその正体を確かめ、結果を報告をしなくてはならない。もしイライが報告に戻らなければ――とそういう判断なのだろう。

 

（ええい、商人は度胸……！　これで人間だと分かれば俺も安心できるってもんだ……！）

 

覚悟を決め、魔女の家へと向かった。商人としての笑顔を張り付けながら庭にいたノエルに話しかけると、魔女は現在水浴び中だからしばらく待てという返答が返ってくる。それにちょっぴりほっとしたのもつかの間、魔女は一分も経たない内に戻ってきた。……イライの気配を察して現れたのかもしれないが。

 

（相変わらず綺麗に整いすぎて作り物みたいに見えるが……これが本当に作り物だったら……）

 

怯えを悟られぬようにへらへらと笑いながら、まずは軽い挨拶と商談を進める。

Trying not to let his fear show, he grinned like a fool and began with light greetings and business talk.

従者であるノエルの考えは手に取るように分かるが、魔女はいつもと変わらぬ様子で何を考えているかいまいち分からない。大抵微笑んでいるだけで会話をしないため、声の抑揚から感情の変化を読み取ることすらできないのだ。

 

（ほんと、食えないやつばかりで胃が痛ぇ……）

 

しかし領主の命令には逆らえない。逆らったらイライの未来はないのである。

 

 

「そういえば魔女さん、今日はお詫びとお礼を兼ねて一つ贈り物をさせていただきたいんですが」

 

 

緊張を悟られぬように必死に表情と声を作り、領主から預かった鏡を取り出す。心底信じ切っている従者もいる場で鏡に映せば、もしその正体が人間ではなかったとしても下手なことはできない――と思いたい。

 

 

「うわぁ……これ、すごい高級品なんじゃ……彫刻の細工がすごくきれいだ。でも、魔女さまにとても似合いますね！」

 

 

鏡が魔女の姿を映し出す。そこに映るのは、目の前の美しい女と喜ぶ少年の姿。……それでようやく、イライは安堵できた。どうやら相手は本当に人間だったようだ。

 

（これで安心して商売に励めるってもんだ。……疑って悪かったが、これも商人として生き抜くには必要なこと。この魔女さんなら理解してくれるだろう）

 

詫びとまではいかないだろうが、魔女の要望を聞いてそれを叶えるために力を尽くすことにした。そして魔法の鏡は、今後あらゆる者が近寄ってくるだろう彼女の身を守る役にも立つだろう。

 

 

「そういえば魔女さん。あの鏡には特別な魔法がかかってましてねぇ」

 

 

正直に種明かしをして、疑っていたことも言外に伝えたところ、魔女はすべてを理解していたと言わんばかりににこりと笑った。……まったく、食えないお人だ。
